DETROIT (Sunday, June 4, 2017) – Graham Rahal put on a remarkable performance during the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear doubleheader. In the No. 15 SoldierStrong / TurnsForTroops.com Honda, Rahal showcased his skills, sweeping both races on the Raceway at Belle Isle Park’s temporary street course. This achievement makes him the first driver to accomplish a doubleheader weekend sweep since Scott Dixon in 2013.
Rahal’s victory on Sunday, with a stunning 1.1772-second lead over Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden, added to his triumph on Saturday. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver’s success propelled him nine spots up in the championship standings, securing sixth place after eight thrilling races. Rahal’s back-to-back wins marked the first time his team had achieved consecutive victories since 2001.
“It feels great. Any day you can beat a Penske driver, it means a lot,” said Rahal, expressing his elation. He attributed his triumph to his ability to maintain a strong pace while conserving fuel, a rare combination. Rahal led an impressive 41 of the 70 laps on the 2.35-mile, 14-turn circuit, proving his dominance on the track.
A Nail-biting Finish
The race remained caution-free until James Hinchcliffe’s No. 5 Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda halted on Lap 66. Upon the restart at the end of Lap 68, Rahal skillfully pulled away from Newgarden, leaving the rest of the pack behind. Newgarden, who started 13th, displayed impressive driving skills, utilizing a three-pit-stop strategy to climb up the ranks. However, in the end, Rahal’s weekend simply couldn’t be matched.
“I think we were all just trying to get to the end there. It was two (laps) to go, and we had marbles all over the tires. In that type of situation, there’s not much you can do, unfortunately,” said Newgarden, acknowledging Rahal’s excellence. Despite his best efforts, Newgarden finished in second place.
Podium Celebrations
In addition to Rahal’s fantastic performance, Will Power secured third place in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, making it a double podium finish for Roger Penske’s team. Pole sitter Takuma Sato, the reigning Indianapolis 500 winner, led 22 laps but had to settle for fourth place in the No. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda.
Meanwhile, Scott Dixon, the four-time series champion, finished sixth in the No. 9 Camping World Honda. Dixon managed to retain his position at the top of the championship standings, maintaining an eight-point lead over Helio Castroneves and an 11-point lead over Sato.
